Putting on the dog Valley merchants answer local demand for canine couture.(LIFE)

She says people sometimes laugh when they see the dogs in their outfits. Other times, people smile and ask where she gets the outfits because they're so cute.

Like James, she says, "I see them as my kids because I don't have kids."

For those who might be considering fashion for their pooches, Young says the younger the dog, the more readily they may take to it. She also says that, on a first try, take the dog immediately for a short walk to help distract the dog's attention. "Before you know it, they're used to it," she says.

Those in the industry don't think this fashion scene will lose traction. Terri Buma, owner of Fancie Face Fashions (www.fanciefacefashions.com) for pets in Visalia, says there is too high a demand for it to go away.

"I don't feel it's going to be just a trend," Buma says. "I don't think it's something that's going to fade out. In fact, I like to tell people that I think in five years, there will be no naked dogs walking the streets."

The split between designers and their namesake brands is seldom smooth, but the flurry of lawsuits and allegations between Paul Frank Industries (PFI) and cofounder Paul Frank Sunich (whose legal last name was all but unknown to the pubic until exited the company in November 2005) has been particularly acrimonious. Sunich, who claims he was kicked to the curb and denied just compensation by partners Ryan Heuser and John Oswald, filed a California state lawsuit in March to dissolve the 10-year-old company. At the same time, he filed a federal case claiming copyright infringement of the iconic Julius the monkey character. PFI struck back with a suit of its own claiming Sunich is infringing the company's "Paul Frank" trademark by using that name on…
